04/08/12 Linda and I left San Diego at 8:00am and arrived at the Boulder Creek RV park in Lone Pine, California about 3pm. We got set up and then drove to the Alabama Hills to view the famous movie area where most of the old western movies were filmed. All of the Lone Ranger movies were done here. The rock formations are so beautiful and the day was perfect, sunny, and in the mid 70's. We all (including Meghan the Irish Terrier)did a short hike to the famous Mobius Rock where I took many photos from many different angles. We stayed to within 30 minutes of the sun disappearing over the mountains.
04/09/12 I got up at 6:00am and drove out to Mobius Rock in Alabama Hills for more photography. I met another serious photographer with a Nikon D800 from Seattle. We did photos of each other perched inside the famous arched rock. Got on the road by 10:00am and arrived in Sparks at the Marina RV Park around 3:30pm. We went to Conrad and Kathy's house for a nice lasagne dinner prepared by Kathy.
04/10/12 We slept in late and had a nice leisurely day at the RV Park taking Meghan for several walks during the day.
04/11/12 Had another leisurely day visiting a yarn shop in South Reno and walking Meghan on the Carson River trail just south of downtown. At night we met Conrad and Nels Erickson at Rail City Casino . This is a huge very popular local haunt which has $3 single deck black jack and numerous slots which Linda loved. We had dinner in the casino at the Ale House which had very good barbecued meats yum yum. Returned home early and watched satellite TV.
04/12/12 Our main reason for visiting Reno was to play in the Reno Bridge Sectional with Conrad and Kathy. I played two events with Conrad today winning first overall in both events. Linda and Kathy also played but did not do well. We had dinner afterwards at the Jewish Deli in the Nugget Casino.
04/13/12 I did so well the first day, so I decided to play in the morning today. We had some problems bidding today as we were playing my precision club system and several things went wrong. We did not play in the afternoon. I took Linda to one of our favorite restaurants; La Strada at the Eldorado Casino in down town Reno. Our dinners where excellent including a Mandarin Soufflé that was to die for. yum yum
04/14/12 The boys and the girls both played a two session open pairs event today. Conrad and I won 2nd place overall in flight A. Linda and Kathy won 2nd place overall in flight B. We were all fairly happy with our results but knew we both could have won 1st overall in our flights. We had dinner at Trader Vics in the Nugget and returned to the trailer to feed and exercise Meghan before retiring.
04/15/12 We left Sparks and stopped at Baldinis for breakfast and to buy propane for the trailer. I drove to Lone Pine California again staying at the Boulder Creek RV Park. I drove south 12 miles to see and photograph the Charcoal Kilns near Owens mostly dry lake bed. The kilns were not much to see and I almost got hopelessly stuck in the sand on the dirt and sandy road into the park. It might be fine for jeeps if they are set up for sand. I did take Meghan with me who enjoyed playing and digging in the sand. A grove of Cottonwood trees nearby were scenic and I printed one shot which got approved in my Darkroomers club.
04/16/12 Got up at 5:30am and drove to Mobius rock for early morning photography. This time there were 2 other photographers at the site which caused some congestion and some unwanted shadows. It was fun to watch the sun peek over the eastern mountains. I left about 7:00am and stopped at the Alabama Cafe for a wonderful breakfast. This is the best restaurant in Lone Pine. Returned to camp and got underway about 10:00am. Arrived home at 4:00pm. Enjoyed the trip a lot.
