SD Zoo 2009

Diary of Roger's photography shoot at the San Diego Zoo, California June 8,13 Nov 6,10, 2009

06/8/09 I went to the SD Zoo today for photo shoot with Rich Strobel, Jose Magsaysay, John Restivo, and Dewey Slough. I purchased a two person yearly pass for $85 which includes two quest passes. It was a beautiful sunny day. I really enjoyed using my new Canon 100-400mm lens which is definitely the perfect lens for shooting the animals at the zoo. We walked past the new Elephant enclosure are which was very impressive. The photos on pages SD1 & SD2 were all shot with my Canon 40D, Canon 100-400mm imaged stabilized zoom lens, on a tripod. I used mostly aperature preferred mode, one shot focus, automatic white balance, evalutive focusing, ISO 200, auto focusing with image stabilization on. I processed must using Canon Camera Raw, Photoshop CS4, a two shots using HDR Phomatrix software which puts 3 frames different exposed and converts it into one high dynamic range shot. Hope you enjoy the photos.

I went to SD Zoo today for a quick photo shoot with Roy Ang an astronomer and photographic buddy from San Diego. Roy who has an huge inventory of great Canon equipment. Today he was shooting with a Canon 30d camera, a Tamron 200-500mm, and a mount a shoulder mount called the Bush Hawk. He helped me with lots photographic theory and equipment related questions. I also was able to look at some of his neat photos on his Iphone which I will be ordering this fall.

11/6/09 Charlene my sister and her husband Mike visited us from Rockford Illinos. On their seconday day Linda and I took them to the San Diego Zoo arriving around 9:30am. We had a great time walking about for 6 hours. I carried my tripod and camera around all day. I was dead tired and ready to leave at 3:00pm.

11/10/09 We missed the tigers and Panda bears the first trip to the zoo, so we stopped in about 10:00am to see these two species. We had good luck as the panda bears and a few of the tigers were active.
