Detroit 2008

Diary of my trip to Detroit for Spring Nationals bridge tournament March 2008

3/6/08 I got up 3:45 am today for my trip to Detroit.  I took Frontier Airlines with a connection in Denver.  All went well and I arrived on time.  The Rockies were beautiful and bulging with snow.  It will be a great spring for water sports on the river and streams.  It cost $45 including tip to go from airport to Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center.  The hotel is beautiful and I am very happy with my room except for the price $129 per night and an extra $15 per night for high speed internet.

3/7/08      Marvin French and I played the National 4 session open pairs qualifying event.  We had a good game in afternoon and below average in the evening but did qualify with about 53%.  They served excellent dessert after the night session; two kinds of Mackinaw Island fudge, strudel with cream on glaze sauce,  and a decadent chocolate raspberry tart.

Marvin and I continued the National Pairs today.  At the end of the afternoon session we were 20th overall.  Unfortunately we had a bad game in the evening and ended up just winth 3.3 platinum points for the tournament.  The hospitality food at the end of the evening session was tri tip roast, gourmet mashed potatoes, and gravy.  I had a good helping of the very yummy tri rip roast only.  This hotel is a very impressive destination, great food, rooms with a view, nice shops, and great banquet facilities.  It is about 14 F. outside today and clear.

I am playing in the knockout pairs today with Fasi, Marvin, and Alice.  We won the first round knockout and lost in the 2nd round.  We each received 2 master points for the win.  Fasio my partner and I ate in Greek Town at the Fish Bones Restaurant.  It was quite good.

3/10/08    I Played with Marvin in flight A open pairs today.  We did lousy in afternoon but, came in 2nd at night gaining 3.2 master points.  Between sessions we ate at the Signature Coach House on the 77th floor in the Marriot.  The view and ambiance was to die for.  I had a fillet mignon special with horseradish mashed potatoes, asparagus and mushrooms which was excellent.  This hotel complex is really awesome.

3/11/08    I flew to Chicago this morning via American Airlines and met Linda who had flown in from San Diego.  We rented a Volkswagen Rabbit car from Enterprise car rental and drove it to Belvidere, Il to meet my sister Charlene and husband Mike.  Charlene cooked us a nice dinner and then we watched TV; the Wheel, Jeopardy, and America Idol the rest of the evening.
